Patch 7.0.0 "Devoid of Liberty" adds AI squad companions, a level cap of 300, and the first Illuminate planet landings — timed to land alongside a Warhammer 40K crossover and a PS Plus Extra debut.
Arrowhead Game Studios shipped Patch 7.0.0, subtitled Devoid of Liberty, on August 12 — the update it had been teasing for weeks under the "Face the Unknown" banner. The level cap doubles from 150 to 300, and Helldivers can now recruit AI-controlled squad companions to fight alongside them.
The patch also opens a new region of the Galactic War map called the Void, where Helldivers can land on Illuminate-controlled planets for the first time. Two new mutated Illuminate enemy types show up there, including a fast-moving variant nicknamed the Wretch that's built to disable weapons on contact.
Arrowhead didn't ship this alone. The same day, a Helldivers 2 x Warhammer 40,000: Castellan's Creed Legendary Warbond went live, bringing gear modeled on the Cadian Kasrkin regiment. And Sony added Helldivers 2 to the PS Plus Extra catalog that same day — a deliberate pairing, timed so new subscribers land in the game right as its biggest content update in years goes live.
Helldivers 2 has drawn more than 22.9 million players since launching in February 2024, and remains one of the more consistently active co-op shooters on Steam and PlayStation two and a half years later.
AI squad companions are a genuinely new mechanic for the game rather than a cosmetic addition — this is the first time players have had a non-human option to fill out a squad, which matters for solo players and anyone trying to clear higher-difficulty missions without a full human team.
